SUMMARY:Decay and Rebirth
DESCRIPTION:Price:\nFree admission \nDate and Time:\nExhibit – February 25 to March 28\, 2026 \nGallery Hours: Wednesday to Saturday Noon to 5:00 pm \nOpening reception: February 28\, 2026 – 1:00 to 3:00 pm \n\n\n\nDecay and Rebirth\nDecay and rebirth describes the continuous natural cycle of things breaking down and then beginning anew\, seen in ecosystems\, spiritual beliefs and art. Artists frequently depict decay and rebirth to symbolize the fragility and resilience of life\, the passage of time\, and the human condition. Philosophers and spiritual leaders around the globe have explored the cycle of life and death\, and rebirth\, and it’s inherent beauty. Mythology too\, with stories like the phoenix rising from it’s own ashes\, have abounded in written and spoken word. \nIn this show\, the artist’s of the Chilliwack Visual Artist’s Association explore this concept through a variety of mediums and wide-ranging interpretations. \n\n\n  \nMedia\nChilliwack Visual Artists Association website \nCVAA Facebook \n

SUMMARY:Narrow Works and 12 Turners' Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Price:\nFree admission \nDate and Time:\nExhibit – June 25 to July 26\, 2025 \nGallery Hours: Wednesday to Saturday Noon to 5:00 pm \nOpening Reception on June 28\, 2025\, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm \n\n\n\nThe “12 Turners” exhibition in the Odlum Brown Art Gallery at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre showcases work created by twelve of the sixty-eight members of the Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild. All with different styles and years of experience\, so the exhibition is quite eclectic. As may be expected from items turned on lathes\, there are a number of circular items such as bowls\, plates and hollow form vases\, but there are also lathe-formed items such as a hedgehog toothpick holder\, a three-cornered jewelry box with a ring post on the lid\, a bird family and a variety of segmental and off-centre ornamental pieces. Much of our wood is locally-sourced from felled trees\, pruning’s and driftwood. In addition to the natural grain pattens\, items may have embellishments by means of colors or by using texturing tools. On wide-grained woods such as Pine\, sandblasting can be used to remove the softer part of growth rings. As to forms\, these may depend on the envisaged usage such as salad and fruit bowls or dishes\, to ornamental such as earrings and pendants\, or decorative such as segmented vases. Then there is the possibility of combining epoxy as a binder for wood with cavities or punky areas. Finishings can be polishes\, waxes or left plain. The making of turned wood items is truly creative and we hope that our exhibition will serve to show some of the myriad possibilities using a wide variety of woods and finishes. \nThe Fibre Art Network (FAN) is a co-operative of self-defined artists based in Western Canada. The group is committed to promoting fibre as an art form and each other as artists. Two of their travelling exhibits titled\, ‘Narrow Works’ & ‘I AM’ will be presented. ‘Narrow Works’ allowed each artist to explore a theme of their choosing\, using their skill\, creativity\, and techniques to create a one-of-a-kind piece\, while working within the restrictive size\, orientation\, and finishing of the canvas. ‘I AM…’ serves as a powerful foundation for exploring identity\, self-expression\, and personal narrative. Each artist’s interpretation of ‘I AM…’ offers a unique perspective\, making for a diverse and thought-provoking exhibit. \n\n\n  \nMedia\nChilliwack Visual Artists Association website \nCVAA Facebook \n

SUMMARY:Light & Shadow
DESCRIPTION:Price:\nFree admission \nDate and Time:\nExhibit – March 12 to April 12\, 2025 \nGallery Hours: Wednesday to Saturday Noon to 5:00 pm \nOpening Reception on March 15\, 2025\, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm \n\n\n\nArtists throughout history have been fascinated with the play of light and shadow and the imagery implied by each. Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo and da Vinci developed the style of chiaroscuro which used high contrast light and dark tones in their work. In the 17th century Rembrandt elevated the use of chiaroscuro to dramatic effect as did other artists including many contemporary artists today. The language of chiaroscuro translates to both representative and abstract art. \nThe theme\, Light and Shadow\, also lends itself to wide interpretation creatively. Light and dark can represent good and evil\, day and night\, Paradise vs the Underworld\, a healthy mind vs mental illness. The psychologist Carl Jung theorized that the mind can be divided into sections that include the healthy Ego (the light) and a section of repressed unconscious thoughts and actions\, called the Shadow. He believed that uncovering and working on this shadowy section of the personal psyche was beneficial to mental health. There is certainly a lot of fodder for individual artistic expression there. \n\n\n  \nMedia\nChilliwack Visual Artists Association website \nCVAA Facebook \n

SUMMARY:Human Nature
DESCRIPTION:Price:\nFree admission \nDate and Time:\nExhibit – February 5 to March 8\, 2025 \nGallery Hours: Wednesday to Saturday Noon to 5:00 pm \nOpening Reception on February 15\, 2025\, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm \n\n\n  \nAs humans we marvel at nature with awe and appreciate the beauty and differences in animals for what they are. This show relates this thought to humans. We struggle to love each other for who we are. Josh Henry’s work embraces the beauty and differences of all of us.\nJosh has been creating art as long as he can remember. Over the years he has evolved with growing styles to make his own. He is on an exciting path of rebirth in his artwork\, it Is filled with color\, life and a positive message. Be it nature\, wildlife\, figurative art the message is clear\, life is beautiful. No matter what shape\, size\, age or walk of life we are all beautiful. In wildlife we are in awe of how beautiful animals or birds are. Not judging shapes and sizes but respecting just how they are. This journey in his art is showing the similarities of this concept towards humans and birds. If we can love the differences of birds then why can’t we do that in our own race. His art will show case the beauty of the human form from all backgrounds and embracing our differences to be displayed directly in front of the viewer to bring up conversation and understanding on how beautiful we can be if we only look\, embrace and understand. \n  \n\n\n  \nMedia\nChilliwack Visual Artists Association website \nCVAA Facebook \n

SUMMARY:Iterations: Explorations in Cloth and Clay
DESCRIPTION:Price:\nFree admission \nDate and Time:\nExhibit – January 2 to February 3\, 2025 \nGallery Hours: Wednesday to Saturday Noon to 5:00 pm \nOpening Reception on January 4\, 2025\, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm \n\n\n  \nArtists Ted Driediger and Lois Klassen collaborate to explore themes and variations in their upcoming joint exhibition “Iterations: Explorations in Cloth and Clay” at the O’Connor Group Art Gallery in the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.\nIn visual art\, as in music\, working within themes and variations offers the artists “playing room” as they revisit an idea\, over and over\, in its various permutations. Reiteration of a concept demonstrates that there is not just one end point to the working out of an idea.  The viewer of these series is invited to participate in the artistic process of exploration and development. \nTed and Lois work in different media\, namely cloth and clay. Multiple possibilities in surface design\, use of colour\, form and shape. are highlighted by this disparity of materials.  Driediger’s sculptural works focus on the idea of community and shelter in a village format with an emphasis on shape\, volume\, and interconnectedness. \nKlassen’s work explores themes of social justice\, grief and loss\, and nostalgia for domestic arts of the past. \n\n\n  \nMedia\nChilliwack Visual Artists Association website \nCVAA Facebook \n
