We are pleased to welcome Stó:lō artisan August(Augie) Mekw Mekw Williams to the Centre as he teaches students how to make a 16” traditional hand drum.

Join Augie as he shares his drum making skills and teaches some of the history and stories of the Stó:lō people. Students will be led in making an elk hide drum and will also take home a drum stick.

Stó:lō artisan August(Augie) Mekw Mekw Williams August Williams, whose traditional name is Mekw Mekw, has been making drums for the past 23 years. Taught by his cousin Francis he went on to be mastered by the late Nelson Leon. He doesn’t just make drums; he is also a hunter, fisherman, and an artisan who works with beads, cedar, hats, and rattles. He has great knowledge of the Halqemeylem language and people and is currently working for the elders.
