“Life to the Limit” invites audiences to step into the lives of two Kyiv filmmakers who left behind an Oscar nominated documentary to volunteer on Ukraine’s eastern front. Through their own footage and memories, the film reveals how the russia Ukrainian war unfolded in the 21st century, exposing the human cost of conflict and the resilience that emerges from tragedy. The original film, “Winter on Fire,” earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature, underscoring the filmmakers’ dedication and impact.
Alongside the screening, a curated art exhibition showcases works by Ukrainian artists displaced by war. Each piece—ranging from expressive paintings to mixed media installations—captures themes of loss, hope, and renewal. Together, the film and exhibition offer a powerful, immersive experience that honors Ukraine’s struggle and celebrates the creative spirit that endures in the face of adversity.
A painting that foretold the storm…
“When I started this work, it was February 20 or 21, 2022. We had just arrived in the Czech Republic a week earlier. On the night of the 19th, I saw these images clearly — three paintings I felt an urgent need to create. Even then, I felt that Ukraine was the shield of Europe.”
The hands in this painting — one at the heart like a prayer, the other on the womb like a mother protecting her unborn child — speak of life. Ukraine is life, just below the heart.
The poppies recall sorrow — growing on fields where warriors died. But there’s warmth, too.
This painting is a symbol of faith, prayer, and the birth of a new world.
